Mikaela is currently pursuing a double major degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, while also minoring in English. She spent most of 2014 conducting research in an environmental geochemistry lab has been assessing  the bioaccessibilities of arsenic-containing waste from mines by utilizing "tailings piles" through phagolysosomal fluid extractions. Mikaela hopes to publish the findings from these and subsequent in vitro and in vivo studies.

Mikaela has gained experience in writing articulate scientific reports and research papers throughout her classes and extracurricular laboratory work; such writing has recently submitted a scientific grant proposal for review.

In contrast to her work in the sciences, Mikaela has a passion for the English language and has insatiably partaken in courses that include composing media, literature studies, and creative writing. She hopes to continue writing throughout her pursuit to become a physician.
